# Prague Logue > Prague charges a tourist rate for cash, taxis, airport buses and pastries, and a local one a tap away. Fares, scams, crowds and neighbourhoods, checked October 2026. An Ultimate Travel Guide (BootsnAll Travel Network) for Prague (Praha), Czechia. Updated 2026-10-03. Editorial, no ads, no affiliate links. Full record: https://www.praguelogue.com/place.json ## Thesis Prague has two prices for nearly everything, and the tourist one is optional. Almost everything a visitor buys in Prague comes in two prices. From the airport, trolleybus 59 and metro line A take you into the centre on a 46 CZK app ticket; the Airport Express bus doubled to 200 CZK in January 2026; and a man in a yellow 'Info' sign outside arrivals will walk you to a car that charges 1,800 CZK for a ride that should cost about 600. A bank ATM gives you crowns at your card's rate; a Euronet machine charges 99 to 199 CZK to a foreign card and pushes a conversion that in one 2026 case cost a tourist more than 4,000 CZK extra. A trdelník, sold in costume as an old Czech recipe, reached the country in 2004 and costs up to 290 CZK in Prague. The tourist price is also paid in time. Prague had more than eight million visitors in 2025, three per cent up on 2024, and most of them stand in the same few hundred metres of Prague 1. DW reported that seven in ten people living in the Old Town are tourists. Thousands gather under the Astronomical Clock for an hourly show that now makes lists of the world's most overrated sights, and a 70-centimetre alley in Malá Strana became so popular on social media that Prague 1 had to bring back its pedestrian traffic light. The city's own response has been to push out the worst of it: organised pub crawls have been banned between 10pm and 6am since October 2024. The local price is simply ordinary Prague life, and it is easy to reach. A 24-hour ticket is 140 CZK in the PID Lítačka app and now includes the rebuilt Petřín funicular. A half-litre of twelve-degree draught averaged 61.50 CZK across Czech pubs in 2025. Vinohrady, Žižkov, Holešovice and Karlín are a few tram stops from the Old Town Square, with beer gardens, Saturday farmers' markets and Vietnamese kitchens that most visitors never see. One thing the city has not fixed: there are still no binding limits on short-term rentals, and campaigners count nearly 12,000 tourist beds inside residential buildings in the centre. Where you sleep is part of the price too. ## PlaceScore 6.8/10 (editorial v1) - Value: 6.5/10. Between 5 and 8: dorms from about 225 CZK, a 140 CZK day ticket and a draught beer near 60-70 CZK are good value for an EU capital, but a Kayak average double of about 5,300 CZK, pub prices up 55% since 2019 and the tourist rates on cash, taxis and the Airport Express eat into it. - Getting around: 8.5/10. Above the 8 anchor: one PID ticket covers metro, trams, buses, ferries, city trains and now the reopened Petřín funicular, the app day cap stops overpaying, and trolleybus 59 links the airport to metro A every few minutes; no airport train before 2030 and the cobbles keep it off 9. - Crowds and timing: 5/10. At the 5 anchor: over eight million visitors in 2025 pack a small core (the Astronomical Clock makes overrated lists, the narrowest alley needed a traffic light), and the classic day trips are crowded too, though the crowding stops a few tram stops out and early hours help. - Safety and hassle: 6/10. Just above 5: violent risk is low, but the scams are many and expensive (fake airport taxi touts, Euronet conversion charges, street money changers with dead Belarusian roubles) and pickpockets work the airport bus and Castle trams; all of it is well documented and avoidable. - Food and drink: 7/10. Near the 8 anchor for drinking and close to it for eating: cheap, excellent draught beer, weekday lunch menus, farmers' markets and a real Vietnamese food culture, held back by heavy, pricier pub food and an Old Town of trdelník stands and tourist menus. - Indie fit: 8/10. At the 8 anchor: Vinohrady, Žižkov, Holešovice and Karlín, the beer gardens, markets and Sapa are all on the one city ticket, and trains reach Kutná Hora in under an hour; the packaged path (pub crawls, bone-church coach tours) is easy to skip. ## Bullshit flags - Claim: "Trdelník is a traditional Czech pastry; you have to try one on the way to Charles Bridge." Reality: It is a Hungarian and Transylvanian chimney cake (kürtőskalács) that reached Czechia in 2004 via a Moravian bakery, Český Krumlov in 2005 and Prague a year or two later; the ice-cream filling dates from 2015. Locals mostly avoid it, and in Czech 'trdelník' can mean a simpleton. An iDNES test in 2026 found basic ones at 79 to 190 CZK and an elaborate Prague version at 290 CZK, most handled with bare hands. Ask a bakery for koláče instead. - Claim: "0% commission: change your money here, or grab cash from the first ATM you see." Reality: Old Town exchange boards advertise 'we sell' rates or rates only for very large sums; some pay half the real rate. The 2019 law bans commissions and gives you three hours to reverse an exchange of up to 1,000 euros, so keep the receipt. The yellow-and-blue Euronet ATMs charge foreign cards 99 to 199 CZK, have billed a balance check nobody saw, and offer a conversion that in one 2026 case added more than 4,000 CZK; a July 2026 fix only made the cancel button bigger. Use a bank ATM and always decline conversion. Never change money on the street: the 'rate' is paid in dead Belarusian roubles. - Claim: "Take the Airport Express, or just grab a taxi outside arrivals." Reality: The Airport Express doubled from 100 to 200 CZK in January 2026 and takes no PID tickets; trolleybus 59 plus metro A costs 46 CZK in the app and runs every few minutes. Outside arrivals, men in yellow 'Info' signs steer people to cars charging 70 CZK a kilometre plus a 500 CZK 'luggage fee'; one passenger paid 1,800 CZK for a 600 CZK ride. Uber is the airport's official taxi (genuine airport staff wear red vests, not yellow signs), Liftago and Bolt also work, and Prague caps metered taxis at 36 CZK a kilometre. The rank at the main station is no better. - Claim: "Be in Old Town Square on the hour to watch the Astronomical Clock." Reality: Thousands stand pressed together waiting for it to strike the hour, which is why it keeps turning up on overrated lists (tenth worldwide in a 2026 review-sentiment ranking, second in Czechia in Flowee's). The clock is worth a look; the crowd is optional. Go up the Old Town Hall tower in its first hour of opening instead, when tickets are half price (175 CZK instead of 350). The same logic applies to the 70cm 'narrowest street' in Malá Strana, now so jammed that Prague 1 restored its pedestrian traffic light. - Claim: "Prague has cracked down on Airbnb, so short-term rentals in the centre are now regulated." Reality: Not yet. As of October 2026 Prague cannot impose limits such as caps on rental days or neighbourhood-only restrictions on its own; a national amendment and the eTurista accommodation register are still being debated. Prague 1 voters backed restrictions in an October 2025 referendum (72%), and campaigners count 11,798 tourist beds inside residential buildings in the centre at mid-2026, only 12 fully compliant. DW reported in 2024 that housing tourists in flats breaks existing law but is not prosecuted. Booking a centre apartment often means renting a home out of the housing stock; a hotel, hostel or flat outside Prague 1 avoids that. ## What has changed - 2024-03-06: Trolleybus 59, run with 24-metre battery trolleybuses, replaced bus 119 between the airport and metro A at Nádraží Veleslavín. Any guide that says 'take the 119' is out of date: the route and fare are the same, the number on the front is 59. - 2024-10: Prague banned organised pub crawls between 10pm and 6am, enforced by the police, as part of a push for 'more cultured' visitors. Night-time crawl tours are gone; some city-centre bars also refuse stag groups. Find your own pubs, which is the better night anyway. - 2026-01-01: A new PID tariff raised single and tourist tickets (30 minutes 39 CZK, 90 minutes 50 CZK, 24 hours 150 CZK, 72 hours 350 CZK on paper, about 10% less in the PID Lítačka app), doubled the Airport Express to 200 CZK, and lifted the on-the-spot fine for riding without a ticket to 1,200 CZK. Buy in the app: it is cheaper, and caps your day at the 24-hour price. Paper tickets must be stamped when you board. - 2025-10: Prague 1 held a local referendum on short-term rentals, with 72% of participating voters backing restrictions; in July 2026 the district asked the government for powers to track hosts and check permits. Rules may tighten after the 9-10 October 2026 municipal elections and a national law, but none bind yet. - 2026-07: Euronet changed the screens on its Czech ATMs after an MEP's complaint to the European Commission over hidden fees. The change only makes 'cancel' more visible; the conversion offer is still there. Use a bank ATM and decline conversion. - 2026-09-22: The Petřín funicular reopened after a two-year closure, with new Doppelmayr cars and no stop at Nebozízek on the way down. A single ride rose from 60 to 100 CZK (90 CZK in the app). The 24-hour and 72-hour tickets include it, so ride up Petřín on the day ticket you already hold. ## Costs (CZK, 2026-10) - A hostel dorm bed: 225 to 574 per night - A hotel double room: 3600 to 7150 per night - A meal at an inexpensive restaurant: 190 to 381 per meal - A half-litre of draught beer: 50 to 75 per half-litre - A cappuccino: 50 to 100 per cup - PID public transport, all of Prague: 140 to 350 24-hour or 72-hour ticket - Airport to the centre: 46 to 200 one way, adult - Old Town Hall tower and interiors: 175 to 350 per adult ## Sources - [New PID Tariff from 1 January 2026: Don't pay more than you have to](https://pid.cz/en/new-pid-tariff-from-1-january-2026-dont-pay-more-than-you-have-to/) (Pražská integrovaná doprava (PID), read 2026-10-03) - [Tickets and fare](https://pid.cz/en/tickets-and-fare/) (Pražská integrovaná doprava (PID), read 2026-10-03) - [Travel to Airport and Stations](https://pid.cz/en/travel-information/airport-and-stations/) (Pražská integrovaná doprava (PID), read 2026-10-03) - [The Petřín funicular resumes service with new cabins on Tuesday, September 22](https://pid.cz/en/the-petrin-funicular-resumes-service-with-new-cabins-on-tuesday-september-22/) (Pražská integrovaná doprava (PID), read 2026-10-03) - [Head to the Airport by the Longest Trolleybus in the Czech Republic](https://www.dpp.cz/en/company/news/detail/342_2540-head-to-the-airport-by-the-longest-trolleybus-in-the-czech-republic) (Prague Public Transit Company (DPP), read 2026-10-03) - [Old Town Hall with Astronomical Clock](https://prague.eu/en/objevujte/old-town-hall-with-astronomical-clock-staromestska-radnice-s-orlojem/) (Prague City Tourism, read 2026-10-03) - [Sedlec: Ossuary and Cathedral, tickets](https://www.sedlec.info/en/) (Sedlec (Roman Catholic Parish of Kutná Hora-Sedlec), read 2026-10-03) - [Safety and security - Czechia travel advice](https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/czech-republic/safety-and-security) (UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, read 2026-10-03) - [Central bank exchange rate fixing, 2 October 2026](https://www.cnb.cz/en/financial-markets/foreign-exchange-market/central-bank-exchange-rate-fixing/central-bank-exchange-rate-fixing/daily.txt?date=02.10.2026) (Czech National Bank, read 2026-10-03) - [Prague bans night-time pub crawls in bid to attract 'more cultured, wealthier' tourists](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/oct/15/prague-pub-crawl-ban-tourism-zdenek-hrib) (The Guardian, read 2026-10-03) - [Prague to ban organised night pub crawls in bid for 'refined' visitors](https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cdxr8yywlgjo) (BBC News, read 2026-10-03) - [Prague battles with the consequences of overtourism](https://www.dw.com/en/prague-battles-with-the-consequences-of-overtourism/a-70779698) (DW, read 2026-10-03) - [Trdelník: The Czech food that's not Czech](https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20241014-trdelnik-the-czech-food-thats-not-czech) (BBC Travel, read 2026-10-03) - [Trdelník test finds big differences in hygiene, taste, and price across Czechia](https://www.expats.cz/czech-news/article/trdelnik-test-finds-big-differences-in-hygiene-taste-and-price-across-czechia) (Expats.cz, read 2026-10-03) - [SCAM ALERT: Beware of Euronet ATMs' hidden extra charge](https://www.expats.cz/czech-news/article/scam-alert-beware-of-euronet-atms-extra-charge) (Expats.cz, read 2026-10-03) - [Czech news in brief for June 9 (Euronet complaint to the European Commission)](https://www.expats.cz/czech-news/article/czech-news-in-brief-for-june-9-2026-tuesday-top-afternoon-headlines) (Expats.cz / ČTK, read 2026-10-03) - [Czech news in brief for July 4 (Euronet modifies ATMs in Czechia)](https://www.expats.cz/czech-news/article/czech-news-in-brief-for-july-4-2026-saturday-top-afternoon-headlines) (Expats.cz / ČTK, read 2026-10-03) - [Ripoff Prague exchange offices no more!
